Les About The Eclipse (Remember that?)
And why Christians should stop listening to Loud mouthed, ignorant, slick talking preacher-type predictions
The older I get the more I am bothered (angered?) by those Christians that are promoting things like the spiritual significance of the Eclipse that occurred on April 8, 2024.
But, followers of Jesus have been promoting the wrong things since the time of Jesus so I try to take it all in stride.
The Apostle Paul address this type of nonsense in I Timothy 4:7 saying to “have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly.”
I really like it in The Passion Translation below…
'Be quick to abstain from senseless traditions and legends, but instead be engaged in the training of truth that brings righteousness.' 1 Timothy 4:7 TPT
I have written some comments and observations about what I heard from Christians on social media and on some very well produced “TV” shows regarding the eclipse but I first want to share HOW we should be thinking about these things.
And basically, these types of events tend to take us away from being “engaged in the training of truth that brings righteousness”
I equate the emphasis on things like the Eclipse with the focus of so many Christians on conspiracy theories. They take our attention AWAY from God and that is called Idolatry.
NOTE: There is a poll about the prophetic at the end of this article that I would love for you to fill out!
Here are a few things we can do to keep engaged in the training of truth that brings righteousness and not getting carried away by “Prophecies”…
Stop looking for and thinking about odd events and start taking care of the stuff in your own life and in the world immediately around you… you are responsible for your time, talents and treasure and not held accountable for knowing about or discerning what an eclipse means.
Let Scripture and the larger narrative of God’s story inform how we view events like the eclipse instead of having these events dictate the meaning of scriptures.
Be extremely careful listening to the prophets who are not connected to spiritual community with leadership and boundaries in place (for them personally and for their words). A man without close relationships should make us suspicious.
Refrain from looking for “prophetic words” that fit neatly into your current perspective or affirm what you already think. This is a huge problem and really difficult to do but very important to attempt.
Hold yourself accountable to hold the prophets you listen to accountable. How? Print out their “words”, especially those about people, timelines and current events and pull them out to check their accuracy. You can "properly” judge the prophetic words without being judgmental towards prophesy.
Old wives tales, senseless traditions and legends and godless myths take our minds and hearts off of the call we have in our life to be salt, light and a sound to this world.
Observations on Quotes About the Eclipse and It’s Meaning
A few thoughts on what I heard leading up to the eclipse. Please note the sound of Crickets coming from those prophetic people who predicted that the eclipse meant something.
“The eclipse is a countdown…”
Really? One of the things I see with many Christians who call themselves prophets of God is the incessant use of “something is coming”…rarely does anything come. And when they say “something is coming!” and are specific about it (God says Trump will win second term!), rarely does it happen. And when they obviously get it wrong, they proclaim they did not get it wrong. Which, as I read it, is telling us that GOD GOT IT WRONG. And in my belief system, God never gets it wrong.
NOTE: And, I hope I have made it clear in my articles previously about the prophetic is that I am ALL IN on the prophetic being for us today and now AND I am not a believer that everything everyone says (or even most!) is from God.
I can be ALL IN with the prophetic AND HIGHLY SKEPTICAL of those who say they are prophetic.
“We need something to scare us”
Really? We DO NOT need something to scare us or God would have sent His Son as a destroyer and not as a sacrifice, a lamb, a brother, or as a Jew. Shame scares us and Shame is always the tool of the Evil One. Repentance is a gift offered to us by God and not a knife held to our neck that we bow to. Conviction comes from the Holy Spirit as a gift of revelation of God’s goodness and puts us in alignment to His ways.
“Our financial system is a demonic Babylonian system”
Really? Compared to what? Compared to the financial systems of several billion other people on this planet? Our system, while not perfect or even near perfect, is far better than the system of almost every other nation that currently exists and has ever existed.
“The global, financial elite system is going to collapse”
“The dollar is collapsing”
Really? These preachers and speakers who almost never have any financial experience or expertise in any area I can ever find KNOW that something is going to happen? To me they all sound just like the guy, THAT GUY, that is telling everyone the system is going to collapse BUT he has the fund (or gold or bitcoin or feathers!) that will survive it all.
Please do not believe “Them” as they do not know what they are talking about.
“God is going to take the money from THEM and give it to US”
Really? Christians have the opportunity to GET the money from THEM every day by shopping smart, living on a budget, learning new skills to increase income, investing in the stock market, and living live more according to Godly work principles. We can DO better!
BTW, this prophetic word about the wealth of the wicked coming to the righteous has been going around as wrong teaching for years, recycling on and off in different forms.
“There are 3 things that are going to take place. First, already the eclipse has happened. Then there will be an earthquake, which is optional. The third thing that we must have is a financial collapse. We must be praying that this collapse happens.”
Really? Stuff like this really rubs me the wrong way. Asking Christians to pray for the financial collapse of a system that has blessed billions of people? To pray for a system that has created the greatest wealth ever seen, pulling a billion or so people out of abject poverty, and creating comforts like mosquito nets, medicines, an abundance of food, and on and on?
“The Wildfires in the Texas Panhandle that killed cattle and bulls are “sacrifices by demons”.
Really? I actually had to go back and listen to this a few times because it just seemed so ridiculous to me. Taking an event that has happened, a very real and tragic event, and then connecting it to a Bible verse is a perverted practice of either ignorant or malevolent people.
I hope this article has helped you get some clarity on what to do with some of this “christian” focus on things like the eclipse and that next time you will have a new path to follow.

Here is an article I wrote in January of last year about prophetic mental models…
Mental Models for The Prophetic
The Prophetic. What a mess!! What even is it? In simple terms prophesy is a spiritual gift for strengthening, encouraging and comfort of others (I Corinthians 14). Although there is an extremely wide spectrum of what is prophetic, I like to start there because it seems like it is in its purest form.
